- 19TH C. CHINESE QING CHAO ZHU NECKLACE
19TH C. CHINESE QING CHAO ZHU NECKLACE AMETHYST & AGATE...East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. Wow! An impressive necklace known as a Chao Zhu made of over 100 beads of semi-precious stones: 108 amethyst beads, 5 quartz beads, jadeite, and several red agate and carnelians, all materials adhering to a strict dress code laid out by Emperor for those at court. The main part of the strand is comprised of spherical purple amethysts punctuated by large red agate flanked by petite green jadeite. Three long cords strung with jadeite beads and translucent quartz teardrop pendants with a brass cap freely dangle, known as the counting strings. The amethyst beads resolve at the woven yellow cord: the counter-weight string. This area has silver discs, red agate, a carnelian stone, a pair of dark amethyst and large clear ovoid quartz and a teardrop quartz at the tip, all worn at the back to hang down the wearer's spine and balance the necklace. Size (necklace): 49" L (124.5 cm); (amethyst beads): 0.35" Diameter (0.9 cm); (large ovoid quartz bead): 1.75" L x 1.5" W (4.4 cm x 3.8 cm)
In 1766 the Qianlong Emperor wanted to bring back the grandeur of courtiers from earlier periods to emphasize class distinctions and social status. The Chao Zhu necklace always had 108 main beads - in this necklace there are 108 amethyst beads, and the materials used designated rank; the emperor had pearls, jade, and coral, and other semi-precious stones for the couriers. Most official portraits of Qing era emperors are in court dress wearing these Chao Zhu necklaces!
